Do supplements really work for memory?
The signs of memory loss can be puzzling and alarming: lost keys, forgetting a street name, that task you suddenly can’t remember. Some of the most popular supplements marketed for memory enhancement are fish oil (omega-3 amino acids); the B vitamins like folic acid, B6 and B12; and ginkgo biloba extract, extracted from the dried leaves of the ginkgo tree.

B vitamins
Certain B-complex vitamins may help slow down memory decline when taken for at least 18 months. According to a two-year study on people over the age of 70 with mild cognitive impairment, individuals who took a combination of B complex vitamins — 800 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid, 500 mcg of vitamin B12, and 20 milligrams (mg) of vitamin B6 – experienced a smaller cognitive decline than those who took a placebo. These vitamins, especially B12, are important for brain health because they help isolate and develop brain neurons. However, 30% of people over 50 do not absorb vitamin B12 properly from food. As a result, such people are more likely to suffer from vitamin deficiency.
If you’re over 50, it’s a good idea to check your vitamin B12 levels. If they are low, consult your doctor; perhaps you should take a daily supplement of 100 to 500 mcg of vitamin B12, possibly alongside 400 mcg of folic acid, even if temporarily. It is also important to ensure that you take 1.7 mg of vitamin B6 every day, which is the recommended daily amount. You can easily get this particular vitamin through your diet or by supplements.
